Hands up who wakes up, rolls over & checks their phone? WhatsApp, emails, Instagram, Twitter, the news, the weather…. It’s a lot to take in before your feet have even touched the ground. We hate doing it, you probably do too. But what if there was….another way?? You may have heard of ‘Miracle Mornings’, as written about by Hal Elrod in his book of the same name. In a nutshell, to have yourself a miracle morning you need to get up early and follow a series of steps to set you up for the day, week and life you want. It seems to be long acknowledged that getting up early (we’re talking an hour before you *need* to be up) is what has led to fame, fortune and success for all the most well regarded CEO’s around. As cynical Brits, it’s hard to watch the archetypal ‘American Dream’ video on miraclemorning.com without some serious eye-rolling about how changing you morning can change humanity. But wrapped up in this over-the-top saving-the-world notion is some actual sound advice that may or may not have occurred to you. So, what is a miracle mornin
SILENCE Meditation, breathing, anything that clears your mind before it goes into the overdrive of today’s to-do’s.AFFIRMATIONS Nervous about that big presentation? Tell yourself, “I am a confident public speaker”. Turn those negative thoughts upside down!VISUALISATION Imagine yourself accomplishing your big life goals. The more small details and exact a picture you build, the more it will become your truth.EXERCISE This doesn’t have to be anything too intense (unless that’s what you like), just a little gentle stretching to wake those tired bones up.READING Whilst a flick through a trashy mag *could* count, it’s far better to reach for that self-help / biography / business book to start your day in an inspiring way.SCRIBING A fancy way of saying ‘write stuff down’. We’re big advocates of getting things out of our heads and onto paper at NMIOB – the space in your brain those thoughts occupied is now clear – magic!
The eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted the hidden acronym above. SAVERS, as in, these steps are Life Savers. Big words, but with hundreds of thousands of people evangelicising about their miraculous mornings, it seems Hal could be onto something. We can see why: making time to think about your body, mind and business first thing is an incredibly positive start to the day, helping you focus in on what’s important whilst encouraging you to reach higher.
Of course, you don’t need to follow these steps to the letter. At NMIOB we like starting the day with a ‘Power Hour’, essentially the same concept of waking up early to work on ourselves. Our mornings look like some journalling (check out ‘The Artist’s Way‘ for encouragement on writing 3 pages of brain splurge first thing), a TED talk or podcast, affirmations, meditation and reading.
So what do you think, have you tried the miracle morning yourself? Perhaps you already do something similar anyway – does it work for you? Comment & let us know!
LIFESTYLES (ROUTINES) OF THE RICH & FAMOUS….
OPRAH is all about a spiritual start to her day; reading 5 quotes first thing, before a daily contemplation, meditation & then a work-out before her work day begins. (This link is an amazing read for ‘how the other half live’ jealousy/admiration. 3,000 trees in her 65 acre garden! Flying crab cakes in for lunch!)RICHARD BRANSON likes a 5am start, some exercise* & a quick social media check-in before his busy day begins, keeping track of that busyness with a notebook (see? it really is all about writing everything down). *His idea of exercise is kite-surfing, so not for everyone. BARACK OBAMA started each day in the White House 2 hours before his first event began. Time to exercise, breakfast & read the newspaper. We like the thought of a slightly relaxed start to the day, and if it worked for him….
